Doha Talks


A vibrant mix of local, regional and international filmmakers and noteworthy personalities will add extra allure to the Doha Tribeca Film Festival through numerous panel discussions, symposiums and workshops. All are welcome at these thought-provoking events.

Events are free to DTFF badge holders. The Industry Conversations and Fabulous Picture Show masterclasses have limited seating and require an email RSVP in advance of the Festival. At all other Doha Talks seating is available on a first come first served basis.

One Minute Films Special Event
with Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Geoff Gilmore, Hiam Abbass and Scandar Copti

Get ready for part two of the One Minute Films Special Event. Following Martin Scorsese and Mohamed Khan’s screening on Friday, this is another great opportunity to watch these nine films with screen legends Robert De Niro and Hiam Abbass, along with Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of Tribeca Film Festival; Geoff Gilmore of Tribeca Enterprises; and Scandar Copti, filmmaker and creator of the One Minute Films at the DTFF.

Across the Arab world, an unprecedented wave of new filmmakers is dramatically changing the way we identify East, West, and everything in between. These young directors, many of whom grew up in the shadow of civil war and political strife in their native countries, are imbuing their filmmaking aesthetic with an often intriguing mix of Arabic subject matter merged with cultural influences from both Hollywood and Europe.
Join this dynamic group as they give words of wisdom to these filmmakers from across the Middle East about their sources of inspiration and the challenges they are facing as they forge ahead with their careers.

Robert De Niro
Co-Founder, Tribeca Film Festival

De Niro is a two-time Oscar® award winning actor, film producer and director. In addition to his prolific film career, he is the co-founder of Tribeca Productions, the Tribeca Film Festival and Tribeca Film Institute as well as a restaurateur and hotelier.

Jane Rosenthal
Co-Founder, Tribeca Film Festival

In 1988, Rosenthal co-founded Tribeca Productions and the Tribeca Film Center with Robert De Niro. She has distinguished herself as a leading film producer with a roster of both critically and commercially acclaimed films. In 2002, De Niro, Rosenthal and her husband Craig Hatkoff created the Tribeca Film Festival in order to foster the revitalization of downtown New York City. They also created the Tribeca Film Institute to provide financial and networking resources to filmmakers and youth.

Geoffrey Gilmore
Chief Creative Officer/Board Member, Tribeca Enterprises

Gilmore is responsible for leading Tribeca’s creative development initiatives and expansion of the brand. He came to Tribeca after serving as Director of the Sundance Film Festival, where since 1990 he was responsible for film selection and programming. Gilmore was also a consultant for the Sundance Channel and Sundance Cinemas and served as head of the UCLA Film & Television Archive's programming. He taught a course on independent production in the UCLA Department of Film and Television and has lectured in Paris, Germany, Japan, and China.

Hiam Abbass
Born in Nazareth in 1960, Hiam Abbass began her acting career in Paris. She’s a veteran of such critical darlings as Hany Abu-Assad's Academy Award-nominated Paradise Now, Steven Spielberg's Munich, and Eran Riklis' The Syrian Bride. For Rikis' new film, Lemon Tree, she is the recipient of a European Film Award nomination and Israeli Film Academy Award for Best Actress. On Munich, in addition to acting, she served as a creative consultant and acting coach to child and first-time actors. She is also an accomplished photographer and the writer and director of two short films, Le Pain and La Danse éternelle. Abbass will next star in Julian Schnabel’s Miral, the lead role of real-life heroine Hind Husseini, who rescued 55 orphan survivors of 1948's Deir Yassin massacre near Jerusalem.

Scandar Copti
DTFF Community Outreach Programmer

Copti is a Palestinian filmmaker born and raised in Jaffa, and is responsible for developing DTFF local community programs. In 2009, his first full-length feature film "Ajami" won the Camera d'Or Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival and the Wolgin Award for Best Full-Length Feature Film at the Jerusalem Film Festival. Formerly a mechanical engineer, Copti has also written, directed and edited several fiction, documentary and experimental short films.

Doha Talks is a series of interactive panels, conversations and masterclasses that begin a series of year-round, thought-provoking dialogues aimed at highlighting the best international and Arab films, promoting an active cinematic culture, and fostering a new generation of Arab filmmakers and film lovers.

A special screening of two short films exploring Qatari history, cinema and national identity: The Scents of Shadows, Hafiz Ali Ali's documentary on the history of Qatari cinema, plus a world premiere screening of Oscar® nominated Peter Webber's Jasim, which honours Sheikh Jasim Al Thani with an entirely Qatari cast. Each film is followed by an extensive Q&A with the director.

عرض خاص لفيلمين قصيرين يستكشفان تاريخ قطر وأفلامها والهوية الوطنية: فيلم "شذا الظلال" الوثائقي للمخرج حافظ علي علي عن تاريخ السينما القطرية وفيلم "جاسم" للمخرج بيتير ويبير الذي يعرض للمرة الأولى في العالم ويكرّم فيه الشيخ جاسم آل ثاني ويتميز بأن جميع الممثلين فيه من الجنسية القطرية. يعقب كل فيلم جلسة حوارية مع المخرج.




The Fabulous Picture Show (FPS) is the only audience interactive film program to focus critically on independent and world cinema — and to place these films in their historical, cultural and political contexts. Packed with exclusive interviews and peppered with abundant clips, it’s like the ultimate ‘Director’s Commentary’ on the latest in contemporary cinema.

Presented by DTFF’s Executive Director Amanda Palmer, FPS is filmed as a live event that brings filmmakers from around the world face-to-face with an inquiring public. Following our opening night screening of Mira Nair's aviation epic Amelia, FPS hosts this special Q&A. Nair has amassed a body of work so eclectic, and so admired, she's arguably the most internationally successful female Asian filmmaker ever. Her 1988 debut feature, Salaam Bombay!won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award®. Since then, she's worked with A-List stars in Mississippi Masala, Vanity Fair, Hysterical Blindness, and scored triumphs with international titles like Monsoon Wedding and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. Nair's masterful ability to juxtapose East and West will surely come to light in a class as full of surprises as the director herself.

Palestinian director Elia Suleiman joins us for a masterclass about the influences that have shaped his characteristically deadpan humor, his exploration for identity, and his savvy political and social consciousness. We'll talk about what many are calling his masterpiece, The Time That Remains, as the final installment of a trilogy charting the Palestinian occupation and displacement over the last 60 years.

The world of film financing experienced its "Golden Age" in the last decade. Equity investment was overflowing and the numbers of films produced and seeking distribution reached record levels. Then overnight, the world markets changed and the financing that had fueled production all over the world dried up. So where do we go from here? Team Qatar is a must see film that follows Qatar's first ever national high school debate team as they were trained by QatarDebate Center's coaches from around the world in the art of rhetoric. Inspired by the film's ability to create new conversation, this special screening will be followed by a debate on a cinematic topic chosen by you. Qatar's newest generation of 15-17 year old debaters will coach our guests as the two teams prepare to test their wits in a head-to-head live debate following the film.
