Synopsis
Fueled by actor Carey Mulligan's remarkable debut, galvanized by Nick Hornby's nuanced and edgy script, and superbly executed by Danish director Lone Scherfig, An Education is a coming of age story that blends realism and poetry to carry us to another realm.
The world of pre-Beatles England is percolating with rebellion and stultified by repression as 16 year old Jenny's world is upended by the attentions of a much older suitor. Jenny's education in the world of smoky bars, concerts, and late night escapades is funny yet acidly critical of a British society on the precipice of transformation. Confronting the age old dilemma of where to continue an education — within university or in the world — this is filmmaking that captures our heart and mind. Recipient of the audience award at Sundance, Lone Scherfig's film captures the elusive nature of adolescent metamorphosis.

Copenhagen, Denmark native Lone Scherfig has written and directed short films, radio dramas, and television series. Films include Italian for Beginners, The Birthday Trip, and On Our Own as well as the English language Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself.
