Synopsis
Veteran Egyptian filmmaker Yousry Nasrallah adapts the famed 'story inside of a story' method of his Arabian Nights title in order to relate several tales about the contemporary condition of women in Cairo in this skillfully drawn modern melodrama.
As much an insight to the nature of relationships between men and women as it is a sharply honed vision of Cairo society, the two main narratives — one focusing on a beautiful, fiercely independent talk show host struggling to have it all, the other about three sisters, their small store, and an involvement with a lower class laborer mutating from romance to tragedy — are threads from two ends of the social spectrum interwoven by mutual dilemmas.
Richly conceived and provocative without being didactic, this a showcase for a master storyteller, one whose talent and honesty make for memorable 'night' of cinema.

Yousry Nasrallah is an Egyptian-born filmmaker who began his career in film after studying economics and political science. In 1987, he directed his first feature, Summer Thefts. Other credits include L’ Aquarium, The Gate of Sun, and El Medina.

يستخدم المخرج المصري المخضرم يسري نصرالله وسيلة "القصة داخل قصة" المقتبسة من عنوان ألف ليلة وليلة بغية سرد قصص تتطرق لوضع المرأة الحالي في القاهرة في أجواء ميلودرامية عصرية. وفي الفيلم نظرة معمقة لطبيعة العلاقات بين المرأة والرجل لكونها تعطي رؤية ثاقبة عن مجتمع القاهرة فنجد الفيلم يروي قصتين أساسيتين: أولهما تركز على مذيعة جميلة وشديدة الاستقلال تعمل في برنامج حواري وتصارع لكي تحصل على كل ما في وسعها القيام به. أما القصة الثانية فتختص بثلاث شقيقات ومتجرهم الصغير وظهور عامل من طبقة أدنى لهن يحوّل قصة حب رومانسية إلى مأساة – وتفضي القصتان إلى رسم لطيف اجتماعي تتشابك فيه معضلات متبادلة.
يثبت المخرج في هذا الفيلم الغني بالأفكار العميقة والإثارة مع الابتعاد عن الموعظة بأنه راوي من الدرجة الأولى, ما يجعله مهارته وصدقه مثاليين لفيلم سينمائي لا ينسى.

يسري نصرالله مخرج مصري بدأ حياته المهنية بعد دراسته الاقتصاد والعلوم السياسية. أخرج فيلمه الأول "سرقات الصيف" في العام 1987 كما قام بإخراج "حوض السمك المائي", و"الباب نحو الشمس", و"المدينة".
