Synopsis
Mira Nair brings Jhumpa Lahiri’s best-selling novel to life in a story about first and second generation Indians living in America. Ashoke brings his new wife to live with him in the States. Virtual strangers, they learn to adapt to a new way of life and struggle to find the balance between cultures as their children grow up as Americans. Their son, Gogol strives to make his life independent of his parents and of the weird Russian writer he was named after.
Nair delves into the questions of identity and self by giving insight to the many that live as foreigners, the children that lose their roots and the distance between families under one roof. Contrasting the vivid and diverse backgrounds of New York and India, The Namesake brings out the similarities at the heart of every person.

تحول ميرا ناير قصة جومبا لاهيري الأكثر مبيعا إلى فيلم يحكي قصة الجيل الأول والثاني للهنود المقيمين في أميركا. أشوك ينقل زوجته الجديدة إلى الولايات المتحدة لتعيش معه. وبما أنهما بالكاد يعرفان بعضهما البعض, فإنهما يحاولان التكيّف مع أسلوب حياة جديدة ويصارعان لإيجاد توازن بين الثقافات لا سيما وأن أطفالهما يكبران كأميركيين. ويسعى ابنهما جوجول للعيش بشكل مستقل عن والديه والكاتب الروسي الغريب الذي سمي تيمنا به.
وتدخل ناير من هنا لطرح مسألة الهوية والذات من خلال تسليط الضوء على حياة العديد في بلاد غريبة وكيف يخسر أطفالهم جذورهم والمسافة التي تفصل بين أفراد الأسرة تحت سقف واحد. فيلم " السمي " يتضمن التضارب بين الخلفيات المتنوعة في نيويورك والهند ولكنه أيضا يبرز أوجه الشبه الكامنة في قلب كل إنسان.
