Synopsis
Mira Nair’s 2001 film is a funny, touching portrayal of love and family in Punjabi culture. On the eve of an arranged marriage, family and friends come from all over the world to celebrate in New Delhi during monsoon season. During the four days leading up to the day, families clash, secrets are revealed and old wounds are healed as the wedding itself cleanses away what was and prepares for what will be. Screenwriter Sabrina Dhawan’s fully realized characters come into existence as if they were taken straight from real life. Nair interweaves the ancient and the modern, the rich and the poor, the innocent and the sexual in today’s globalized Delhi. Full of vibrant color and life made richer with music, Nair creates a beautifully intimate world that speaks specifically of her home and yet emerges as universal.
