Synopsis
In his short film, The Scents of Shadows, filmmaker Hafiz Ali Ali tells the story of how cinema came to Qatar. Beginning with the screenings organized by oil companies in the mid-twentieth century and through interviews with people who attended these inaugural events, Ali Ali takes us on a journey through Qatari cinematic history. From 8mm to 16mm and from home viewings to the emergence of public venues and, ultimately, the cinema houses of today, this film depicts the birth of Qatari’s love of film.
Director's Bio
A native of Doha, Hafiz Ali Aliz was an actor on several Qatar TV series before leaving to study Theatre Design and Technology in California. His films include The Scents of Shadows, The Oryx Return, and Qatari Faces; narrative film credits include Ghranghoo, Cab Driver, Honey I’m Home, Just for You, and Now Within.
